"Beryl E. Flora Wedding--
The wedding was in Homestead, Montana. In those days Pastors came to town every six months, taking care of weddings, baptisms, funerals and speaking the word of the Lord. The meetings were held in tents. Beryl talked
the pastor into staying over a day so he and Della could get married. It was to be a secret, but a blabby pastor told and Beryl's mother made cookies and told everybody in town. Beryl picked up Della in his horse and buggy. When they entered, the wedding march was played. After the vows, Beryl's mother served coffee and cookies. Della's family were not there as they lived in Wadena, Minn. Della had gone to Homestead to teach school.
They left Montana and started to farm south of New York Mills, Minn. I was born in Wadena and Lyle was born on the south New York Mills farm. We left the farm and dad had a grocery store in Verndale, MN. Lelyn was born in Verndale. It was there that my sewing abilities showed up. Mother came into the house and found that I had taken one of her good sheets and cut out a doll's dress.
We left Verndale to go to California in an old Overland car that had izzing glass windows. We lived in Pasadina part time in a tent. The trip out there was on gravel trails used more or less by wagons. They had one lane with turn outs for when one met another car. We returned to the Wadena farm then to the farm north of New York Mills. This was the Tiffany farm. Here Laird was born. We kids did most of our growing up here. There were more fun times.
Our dad was a farmer. It was hard work and depression times but determination brought us through. We had a beautiful herd of registered Gurensey cows. We had a Welsh pony that was brown and white. We called her Queen and she was. I thought we kids were the richest kids in the country. There was a lot of hard work with both parents working in the fields; Dad with four horses and Mom dricing the tractor. We watered the cows a distance from the house by dipping the water up by the bucket full with an iron pot and filled with rocks and a pail on the other end with a pole in the middle.
Mother washed clothes with a washboard. Then came the machine where one put a foot on one lever and pulled with a hand on another lever. It was not fun. Later dad brought a machine home that had a pulley on it that went to an engine that hated to start and the tub leaked.
We took many trips. Later dad made the first house on a truck bed and we had the first motor home. It was not fancy but it served the purpose. It was fun times. We were lucky kids because our parents worked hard and made us good citizens. They taught us love and we learned about God. We had no fear of life. Thank you for giving me these parents." written by Lorraine Flora Tangen
