"DIED. PATTY--At his home in this city on Monday,
May 12, 1890, at 9 o'clock a.m., W. R. PATTY, aged 72 years.
`Father' PATTY, as he was familiarly called,
was a native of Tennessee. In November,
1852, he came to Oregon settling at Milaukee, Clackamas county. He resided for a short time in Polk and
Yamhill counties, and in 1860 he came to Salem and located. In the same year he connected himself in
business of the Capital Lumbering mill company; remaining with them a few years
he sold out and settled on a farm near Amity.
After remaining there eight years and over he came back to Salem and
re-engaged in the lumbering business. At
the time of his death he was the president of this mill. He has been thrice married and leaves a wife
and two children to mourn his loss.
The funeral will be held this forenoon at 11
o'clock at the Methodist church, of which he was a member, and the remains will
be interred in the Lee Mission cemetery, east of Salem." Oregon Statesman, May 14, 1890 4:3.
"George M. Patty,
a farmer near Amity, came to Oregon in 1852.... His great-grandfather, Patty,
came from London and settled in East Tennessee, where his son, Josiah PATTY was
born. It was here that Josiah was married
and where William Rooker PATTY was born.
William R. was born October 10, 1817, the
son of Josiah and Elizabeth (Rooker) Patty.
He was married to Miss Martha Ann GREEN (a native of his own state of
Tennessee) in 1839. Three children were born to them in
Tennessee. One of the children was born
dead.
With his remaining family William removed to
Arkansas and settled on a farm twelve miles from VanBuren, where three other
children were born into the family. His
daughter died at the age of 1 year 10
months. In 1852 the family crossed the
plains and mountains to Oregon. The son James died of
cholera on the trail, and the bereaved family buried him by the roadside, and
pressed forward to Oregon.
On their journey all the stock died except
one yoke of oxen; and when they arrived at Milwaukee William was very sick with
mountain fever, and couldn't even turn himself over in bed. They had only $10 left, with which
they purchased 50 pounds of shorts for bread; and this, with salmon, which was
abundant, formed their diet.
They remained at Milwaukee from October to
April, during which time William recovered.
They then removed to Salt Creek in Polk county, where both William and
Martha were employed by William Robinson. In October, 1853, they came to Yamhill County
and occupied a donation claim three and a half miles northwest of Willamina, a
hill ranch of 320 acres, their residence being a small log cabin of primitive
style; and here they lived and improved the place until 1860, when they sold out
and went to Salem, where William went to work at the carpenters' trade, and
later in sawmilling. In 1879 they
removed to Yamhill county and purchased the "Milk" Johnson donation
land claim of 552 acres; and on this property they erected a good farm residence
and barn. He was then obliged to take
back the mill, and he again returned to Salem. Martha Ann died 16
July 1880 and William died May 12, 1890.
He had been a devout Christian man, a local
preacher of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and had taken every opportunity to
do his fellows good. He worked hard on
his farm and at his trade, and often traveled many
miles and preached zealously and faithfully, without asking or receiving any
remuneration. He was a strong temperance
man, and Republican from the organization of that party. He left a good name, a
priceless legacy for his children. [History of Oregon by Hines, Excerpt from
