1861 David and brother-in-law Lafayette Green joined the Confederate guerilla movement under Col. James J. Clarkson. Six companies of cavalry were formed for six month enlistment periods as well as infantry. David was in Company D of Clarkson's Battalion, Confederate Cavalry Independent Rangers (Lafayette was in Company A). They joined as privates and left as privates.
David decided to move his family out of war torn Arkansas. In 1869 he took his family to Oregon by ox team with his mother and siblings. Nancy Emeline "Emily" was pregnant and her husband died either on the trip or shortly thereafter. Their last child was born after the census in June 1870.

Notes for WILLIAM HENRY WILLIAMS:
At the close of the Civil War, marauding guerrillas terrorized the countryside in Arkansas looking for food. A group of them came upon 14 year old William Henry and demanded to know where his father was. He couldn't give them an answer because his father, David, was with the Confederate Army, and no one knew where they were. The guerrillas tied young William Henry's hands behind him and put a rope around his neck. They threw the rope over the limb of an apple tree and pulled him up until his face turned blue. They brought him down and asked again--and again. Finally they left. (This story was told by William Henry's daughter, Mae, to his niece, Arva many times.)

1884 left the Dalles in a covered wagon for Grangeville, Idaho Co, ID. There he built a log cabin near the foothills and raised sheep. On January 28, 1895 William made the final payment of $50 on his homestead. It was successful for awhile, but in 1897 a severe depression hit the county and William Henry Williams was financially ruined. During the ten years following the depression William Henry Sr. served as a substitute police officer in Grangeville. It was while doing his duty that he was shot and killed by Joe Sorrow.
