AUMSVILLE
Aumsville is located on the site of the Henry L. Turner pioneer farm.
Turner and his sons and son-in-law, Amos M. Davis, built a flour mill
there, and for a time the place was called Hoggum, because there were
so many pigs around. Before the mill was completed, Amos Davis died,
on Dec 26, 1863. Turner was fond of his son-in-law, who was generally
called Aumus, and after Amos's death, he named the place Aumsville. The
first Post office was established in 1862 and named Condit after the
first postmaster, Cyrenius Condit. The name of the office was changed
to Aumsville in 1868, with John W. Cusick postmaster. The Condit
post office was first on the Condit property about three miles SW of
the present site of Aumsville. About 1865 it was moved about a mile
and a half west to the William Morris place. It was moved to Aumsville
with the name change in 1868.
My name is Stephenie Flora. I am host for Marion County, OR.
