AURORA

Founded as a self sustaining religious colony by Dr. William Keil in 1856, Aurora was named after his daughter. The Aurora Mills post office was established in 1857 with William Keil at the first postmaster. The name was changed to Aurora on Dec. 10, 1894.

Aurora is virtually the same size today as it was then. Much of the down town buildings have been restored and contain antique shops and crafts.

Old Aurora Colony Museum at 2nd and Liberty sts is part of a five-building museum complex that includes the 1860 Ox Barn which is complete with original furniture, musical instruments, quilts and tools. Behind it is the 1863 Kraus Colony Home, the 1876 Steinbach Log Cabin, a machine shed and a wash house, all of which have been restored.
