FAIRFIELD, MARION COUNTY, OREGON

In 1836, retired Hudson Bay Company employees, living on French Prairie, petitioned for a Catholic Priest to serve their spiritual needs. With the support of Dr. John McLoughlin, they constructed a small, crude, log church on the river bank at the confluence of the Willamette River and Fairfield Slough. It was three years before a priest, Father Blanchet, vicar general, arrived.

On January 6, 1839, the little church was blessed at the Feast of Epiphany and placed under the patronage of St. Paul. It was here that the first mass was held. After a brief period of time, it was determined that the Fairfield church was not properly located and the center for worship was transferred to St. Paul.

Even so, the first Catholic church in the northwest endured at Fairfield for many decades. As late as 1900 the little church of logs was used by William Hager, Fairfield merchant, as a storage facility.

1850 Freeman E. Eldriedge purchased Joseph Gervais claim of 642 acres. he then purchased 643 acres from Xavier Laderoute and ultimately expanded his holdings to 2000 acres.

Fairfield, located 16 miles north of Salem, was located on the J.C. Peebles land claim. In 1852 the first postoffice was established with J.C. Peebles as postmaster.

1853 Ben Simpson completed a new warehouse that also offered a supply of dry goods and groceries for sale. Not to be outdone, J.C. Waldo and Company also built a large warehouse that included goods and groceries.

1856 The first store was built by Green Clay Davidson. This 20X40 foot structure with hewed sills and pole rafters was used decades later as the Fairfield Grange Hall.

The second store at Fairfield was built by I.M. Lawrence who later sold it to E.A. Breyman. Breyman, later build another store. It was a two story structure with an upstairs loft that was later used as a community hall.

1858 Fairfield school was established and continued in use until 1948. After 90 years of usage, the building was declared unsafe.

1870 Population 613. Better roads and railroads were instrumental in the decline of Fairfield.

1872 William Hager, a young Swiss, started clerking in Breyman's store. Less than 10 years later he owned the store and became the postmaster until Dec. 22, 1902 when the post office was withdrawn. Hager continued as manager of the store until his death in 1908. The Fairfield church was built on a site donated by E.A. Breyman.

1916 Fairfield store burned when someone candling eggs was careless with fire.

In it's declining years the warehouses were dismantled for the salvage materials by D.B. DuRette. The hotel, a large white building, was removed to the farm of L.A. Byrd where it was used as a residence.

1939 On March 5, 1939 the sole owners of what had been the town of Fairfield petitioned for vacation of the town plat.
