Located on North Santiam River, about four miles upstream from Detroit, it was named by the proprietor of the resort hotel. The Oregon Pacific Railroad reached Idanha in 1889 but there was little activity in the area until 1895, when the Idanha post office was established with Alma Kriesel as postmaster.
