McCLANE CEMETERY

       compiled by Stephenie Flora

"The First Graveyard--We believe the first burying ground in Salem was that in North Salem near the present residence of J. B. McCLANE.  A rather singular fact in connection with this, to Salemites, ancient burying ground is that the graves were dug and the corpses laid North and South--heads to the North.  There were only the remains of a few persons deposited here and we are told they will be removed to the old Missionary Cemetery." Weekly Salem Mercury, April 29,1871, 3:4.

John Burch McClane was a pioneer of 1843.  He was 23 years old when he came to Oregon.  In 1849 he married Helen C. Judson, daughter of the Rev. L.H. Judson.  J.B. McClane was active in public life.  He was appointed Salem's first postmaster in 1850, he was elected county treasurer the same year.  In 1853 he returned east where he remained for 3 years.  In 1861 he was again appointed postmaster.  From 1868-1872 he was state librarian, and then served for 10 years as a baliff of the supreme court.  From 1885-1889 he served as agent at the Grande Ronde Indian agency.  He died January 21, 1892 and is buried at Salem Pioneer Cemetery.
